Fast solar wind acceleration by Alfvén waves: observable effects on the EUV lines detected by SOHO/UVCS

چکیده
SOHO/UVCS observations of the most intense EUV spectral lines emitted by the solar corona have been providing us a good opportunity to study in detail the acceleration regions of the solar wind. In this work we aim at deriving useful diagnostics and identifying possible signatures of Alfvén waves momentum deposition. More specifically we investigate, with the help of a detailed wind model (Orlando et al. 1996), the insight and the constraints that these observations give on the presence of Alfvén waves, as deduced from the influence of the waves on the solar wind structure and dynamics. The model developed by Orlando et al. (1996) accounts for the momentum deposition by a spectrum of non-WKB Alfvén waves, generated in the Sun’s lower atmosphere and undergoing significant reflection across the transition region. We compute a set of wind solutions characterized by different physical conditions, synthesize, from them, the emission in the Lyα, Lyβ and O VI doublet (1032 Å, 1038 Å) lines and derive possible diagnostics. We finally compare our results with the most recent SOHO/UVCS data.

New Insights into Solar Wind Physics from Soho
The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) was launched in December 1995 with a suite of instruments designed to answer long-standing questions about the Sun’s internal structure, its extensive outer atmosphere, and the solar wind. This paper reviews the new understanding of the physical processes responsible for the solar wind that have come from the past 8 years of SOHO observations, analy...
متن کاملCoronal Heating versus Solar Wind Acceleration
Parker’s initial insights from 1958 provided a key causal link between the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. However, we still do not know what fraction of the solar wind’s mass, momentum, and energy flux is driven by Parker-type gas pressure gradients, and what fraction is driven by, e.g., wave-particle interactions or turbulence. SOHO has been pivotal in brin...
متن کاملSolar off - limb line widths : Alfvén waves , ion - cyclotron waves , and preferential heating
Context. Alfvén waves and ion-cyclotron absorption of high-frequency waves are frequently brought into models devoted to coronal heating and fast solar-wind acceleration. Signatures of ion-cyclotron resonance have already been observed in situ in the solar wind (HELIOS spacecrafts) and, recently, in the upper corona (UVCS/SOHO remote-sensing results). Aims. We propose a method to constrain both...

We present in this Letter the first coordinated radio occultation measurements and ultraviolet observations of the inner corona below 5.5 Rs, obtained during the Galileo solar conjunction in January 1997, to establish the origin of the slow solar wind. Limits on the flow speed are derived from the Doppler dimming of the resonantly scattered component of the oxygen 1032 Å and 1037 Å lines as mea...
